The author
Dino Buzzati (1906-1972)
In his short prose, writer Dino Buzzati could be beautifully ruthless. He once compiled a list of the things he openly admitted to hating. Jokes, the sound of bells, eggplant, teetotalers—even the constellation of Orion! Buzzati spared nothing and no one.
Originally a note in a Corriere column, the list was later expanded and published in Siamo spiacenti di, from which this excerpt is taken.
